On This Day - July 03, 1963. The Ansett Flying Boat Services Short S-25 Sandringham Mk 4 'Tasman Class' flying boat VH-BRE 'Pacific Chieftain' was badly damaged when it broke its mooring in the lagoon at Lord Howe Island and was blown ashore during the night, due to strong winds. The aircraft was then refloated and returned to another mooring with heavy sandbags placed on its port wing to provide some stability. The aircraft's starboard float could not sustain the pounding and failed, causing the aircraft to become partially submerged. |
