The Qantas Empire Airways Short S.23C 'Empire' Class flying boat VH-ABA 'Carpentaria' was reregistered as G-AFBJ. This aircraft had been isolated in the western sector of the 'Horsehoe Route' in February 1942, due to Japanese war activities in south-east Asia. Ownership was not officially transferred to British Overseas Airways Corporation until August 11.

The Trans-Australia Airlines Boeing 727-76 VH-TJF 'William Dampier' arrived at Melbourne (Essendon) having completed its delivery flight from the United States (Seattle). Shortly after its arrival it was damaged by a forklift driver who punched a hole in the fuselage, whilst unloading from the front starboard galley door. It took 3 days to repair the aircraft before it was cleared to enter service.
