On This Day - September 23, 1980.

The final Boeing 727-276A ordered new by Trans-Australia Airlines in December 1970, arrived at Melbourne (Tullamarine), having completed its delivery flight from the United States (Seattle). This aircraft, VH-TBR 'Bert Hinkler' was routed via Christchurch as a 'flag-waving' exercise to promote the airline's recently announced direct jet services from Hobart to Christchurch (New Zealand).

The Qantas Airways Boeing 747-438 VH-OJH 'City of Darwin' was badly damaged when it hydroplaned off the end of the runway whilst landing at Bangkok (Thailand). Minor injuries were sustained by 28 passengers.
